So you've chosen your first guitar, learned a little bit about playing it, have a few songs under your belt, and can make your way through the Blues. Now you start playing with other people! This is where you will make the most advances in your playing. When you make music with other people, you learn what works and what doesn't, how to play in time, and how to work with others! Since musicians need other musicians to play songs, this is one of the most important skills you can develop!The hard part is generally finding like-minded people to play with. If you're still in school, you'll know who the other musicians are – start talking with them and see what their interests are and set up times to get together to jam. If you're not in school, I suggest going to a guitar store or music store where a lot of the local players hang out, every town has one. You can also go online and look for local forums of people who want to play.Once you get together, now's a good time to “feel” one another out. A good start is with playing a 12-bar Blues because it's something that everyone will be familiar with.Here are a few tips once you start playing:• Listen! Making music is as much about listening to the other players as it is just flat-out playing. Make sure that what you're playing doesn't “step on another player's toes.” This means that you don't want to overplay and not let someone else express themselves. There will be plenty of time for you to strut your stuff.• Keep good time! This will be the hardest part for new players that haven't played with other people very often. I always tried to lock my time to the drummer since s/he's the band's “metronome.” Remember, rhythm is the primary attribute in music. People relate to it first and best. Many a conductor has said, “I'd rather hear you play the wrong note at the right time than the right note at the wrong time.” Meaning, if the right note is played at the wrong time, everyone knows you've made a mistake. If the wrong note is played at the right time, people think you meant to do it.• Try to keep your volume down. This is hard for newbies, but it's critical. If it gets too loud, no one can really hear what everyone else is doing. Leave your ego at the door. Make it just loud enough to hear yourself, and then back it down just a bit. Everyone has their opinion as to what sounds good, what's cool, etc, and what isn't. Don't be a doormat, but don't personally criticize someone. OK, so everyone's heard of the typical Major and Minor scales, and almost no one has heard of the pentatonic scales. So why am I starting with the pentatonic scales? There are many different five-tone scales from all over the globe, but the scale we're concerned with here is Western in origin. The cool thing about the following scale is that it's like two scales in one. They are very similar to the traditional Major (Ionian) and Minor (Aeolian) scales that we hear and use every day. The difference is that the traditional Major and Minor scales have seven (7) notes per octave, and the pentatonic scales have five. Also, it can be both a major scale and a minor scale depending on how it's used. Now, uptight music theorists will tell you that the pentatonic scale is neither major nor minor, and they are correct, but it can also be both!!If you look at the A minor/C major pentatonic scale (this means that this pentatonic scale can be played with either a minor or major emphasis), and looks at the A Minor (Aeolian) scale or the C Major (Ionian) scale to compare we see that two notes are missing from these scales in their pentatonic counterpart:First you need to know that both A Minor (Aeolian) and C Major (Ionian) are related to one another. A Minor is the relative minor to C Major and C Major is the relative major to A Minor. This means that they both have the exact same notes in them. The difference is that A Minor starts on A, and C Major starts on C.A Minor (Aeolian): A – B – C – D – E – F – G – AC Major (Ionian): C – D – E – F – G – A – B – CSee how nicely they line up? They're really just the same group of notes with different starting points. This gives them such a different sound. **Heads up: when scales are relative to one another they share the same key signature as well.Now back to the pentatonic scale.A Minor (Aeolian):ABCDEFGAA minor Pentatonic:A--CDE--GAC Major (Ionian):CDEFGABCC major Pentatonic:CDE--GA--COkay, notice that the B and F are missing in these pentatonic versions of the major and minor scales. It's removing these two notes that creates the pentatonic scale. When one is first learning to improvise, it's those two scale positions that cause the most frustration. You see, B and F are only one fret away from two of the strongest in notes in both C Major and A Minor. B is right next to C, and F is right next to E. These two notes help make the chord built off the root note in either scale. The notes B and F are only strong in very specific cases in the keys of C Major and A Minor, so when you land on them at the “wrong” time, they will sound BAD!! One has to be more familiar with how the scales function to make B and F work whenever they want to. Since I'm assuming that you're just starting out, I will assume that you're not so familiar and that the extra notes will cause you frustration. I had a very hard time with those two notes myself until I became more accomplished.I chose these roots because if you look at the Circle of Fifths, one will see that C Major and its relative, A Minor, have no accidentals in their key signatures. Paranormal Activity, the super-low-budget movie that's actually been lying around for two years, gets a high rise in profits and it has The Blair Witch Project to thank. And when I say "super-low-budget", I'm mean embarrassingly low. Blair Witch was around $20,000, but Paranormal Activity managed to record over that figure with $15,000, which results as a slap to the face (or forehead) of Hollywood movie marketers.Another major difference is that Blair Witch attempted to sell itself as a documentary which is actually wasn't at all and this angered the audience quite a bit before they even saw it. Paranormal Activity on the other hand is relying much more on the reaction of the audience to market itself. Before understanding how this is being done, here's a little background.The horror flick directed by Oren Peli, an up and coming San Diego filmmaker, began garnering attention to the extent of what some are calling a cult following about a year ago after giving the film a screening at the 2008 Slamdance Film Festival. Who else but Steven Spielberg of all people was originally interested in directing a re-make of the film with a much larger budget (the blockbuster director obviously hasn't gotten enough out of paranormal movie making). He intended to put the original cut into the DVD release as a DVD extra, but then carried the film over to Paramount/DreamWorks where it's subsequently taken off as is.The grassroots-marketing use of the Paranormal Activity movie's web page is what is allowing the film to be brought to select theaters, literally by the audience requesting (or "demanding" as the website says) it to their local theater by pressing a button, and the movie has Josh Greenstein and Megan Colligan of Eventful to thank.
